CAROLACE GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Cluny Lace- lace made on a Jacquard braiding machine. This type of lace is traditionally made of 100% cotton.
Raschel lace- This is a knitted lace manufactured on a warp knitting machine- usually made in polyester or nylon.
Eyelet Embroidery- this can be either a narrow trim or a full width fabric made on batiste or “shirting fabric” with holes bohred into the fabric and then stitched to create eyelets.
Ric Rac- This is a popular trim made of cotton or polyester. It is sometimes referred to as a “wave braid”.
Venice lace- Often called Bridal Lace, Venice lace is made mostly of cotton and rayon yarns. This lace is an embroidered lace with great pattern abilities from edges to allovers to shapes.
Edge- any trim with a scallop on one side.
Galloon- any trim with a scallop on both sides.
Insert- a trim with straight edges on both sides.
Applique- a completely embroidered-stitched design made separately and then sewn onto a cloth or garment. Sometimes called a patch or medallion.
Braiding- The intertwining of 3 or more yarns to make a cord or trim. The yarns form a regular diagonal pattern down the length of the trim.
Cord- the product formed by twisting 2 or more plied yarns together.
Crocheting- the interlocking of loops from a single thread with a hooked needle. Embroidery- ornamental designs worked on a fabric with yarn.
Hand- the tactile qualities of fabric. The softness, firmness, fineness, resilience and other qualities perceived by touch.
Jacquard- a system that utilizes a highly versatile pattern mechanism to produce large and intricate designs.
Narrow fabric- a woven or knitted fabric 12 inches or less in width.
